Why “Taste of Manila”?![]() The name of the festival attracts someone to experience the Philippines at its best right on Canadian soil. It motivates all festival-loving people to flock to “Little Manila” to feast on Philippine delicacies and to savor the authentic Filipino culinary delights. For the business community, the name also invites someone to be introduced to Filipino imported products and services offered in the thriving Filipino business community. Another taste of Filipino culture is the presentation of an overflowing pool of Filipino talents in the entertainment field. Philippine fashion is considered one of the festival highlights as signature and upcoming Filipino designers promote the fabrics of the Philippines to mainstream Toronto.
The festival will also serve as a gateway for mainstream business entities in pursuit of capturing the Filipino market with its proven buying power. The Taste of Manila will endeavor to promote tourism and remain as a cultural window into the heart and spirit of the Canadian-Filipino community. How will the Taste of Manila be different from the other festivals in the community? The Taste of Manila is the ONLY Filipino street festival in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and aptly located in North York, home of the largest area of concentration for Filipinos in Canada, dubbed as “Little Manila”. The festival closes a portion of a major Toronto street – Bathurst Street – corner of Wilson Avenue. It is a FREE event. The extraordinary success during its initial presentation in 2014 has garnered an unprecedented standing as the 3rd largest festival in the GTA to date. What is the expected audience size? As the festival is a FREE event and fully supported by the Filipino media community, the festival will continue to enjoy the influx of tens of thousands of festival goers. It can expect some 85% of Filipino community attendance from the GTA and from all over North America drawn by the festival’s publicity outreach and 15% mainstream presence. In 2014, ToM drew a crowd of 60,000 during its inaugural festival and 2015 saw a record-breaking attendance of approximately 200,000 over 2 days; thus, making the Taste of Manila the largest Filipino festival in North America. There are more than 700,000 people of Filipino descent in Canada and half of the population reside in the Greater Toronto Area. The Philippines became Canada’s “Top source country for permanent residents to Canada in 2014”.(Source: News Release Government of Canada http://news.gc.ca/web/article-en.do?nid=972769) Compiled by Teresa Torralba, WAVES News Publisher - www.filipinosmakingwaves.com
